Volunteer Opportunities!

Carved Pumpkin 2017

As we say “Good-Bye” to summer today with the last day of August – it is time to start looking to the Children at Risk Fall Fundraising Events and Activities…
Our Fall has usually been busy with our Fall Raffle, 50-50 sales at hockey games, Autism Brunch, New Year’s Eve Charity Ball and – of course – our Flagship – the Celebrity-Carved Pumpkin Fundraiser & Auction.

Unfortunately – we have 2 of these that WILL NOT be happening this year…50-50 sales and the Fall Raffle…which will cost the Charity $15,000 in Revenues…
For many years, we have been fortunate to be involved in the Ottawa 67’s 50-50 sales – first as a Recipient Charity through the Kiwanis Club of Rideau – and the past 2 years running it with the 67’s Foundation – having a phenomenal opportunity to raise thousands of $’s over the years for our Programs. We were just recently informed that the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) – comprised of the 67’s, the RedBlacks and the Fury – will be announcing a more formal Foundation – and the 50-50 sales will support amateur sports that align with their Professional Teams.

For our Fall Raffle – we used our WestJet donation for the Spring Raffle while awaiting an answer from Air Canada – who cannot extend a donation this year – and Porter Airlines has their Giving program on hold – so without a Headliner Prize for our Raffle – tickets are very difficult to sell – and the effort to replace this large Prize is high – the tough part of this decision NOT to hold the Raffle is the $11,000 that it raised for our Programs…
SO
We need to look to the Events that will still happen – and the 1st is our Marker Pumpkin Fundraiser Event in October!
BUT
In order to make this the BEST year ever – and hopefully raise even more funds – we have some work to do:

  1. Gather Prizes for the Pumpkin on-line Auction (many of our Celebrity Carvers still love to Participate – but have less to offer for the Auction Prizes)
  2. Staff all the Mall Displays with a Manager and Volunteers

This Year we are looking at a change of one mall – Lincoln Fields – to Billings Bridge Shopping Centre – and we NEED to recruit 1 Pumpkin Mall Manager – for Place d’Orleans. This Person would be responsible for scheduling the Volunteers at the Display, as well as managing the Prizes, Cash Donations and Ballot Prize Sales for the Mall. I would be delighted to chat with anyone who can consider this Volunteer Position. This mall display will run from Friday, October 27 to Sunday, October 29 – so the Pumpkin Mall Manager needs to be available those days (not on-site all the time but managing the set-up and volunteers).

Below is info on our Event with dates and times of the 4 Mall Displays -

22nd ANNUAL CELEBRITY- CARVED PUMPKIN CONTEST – OCTOBER 26-29, 2017

We are now celebrating 22 years of sacrificing Pumpkins for Children at Risk in acknowledging October as Autism Awareness Month in Canada with our Celebrity-Carved Pumpkin Contest! This seasonal and fun event has helped not only to raise valuable funds for the Autism Community, but raise awareness about Autism and the challenges families experience raising a child with this disability.

As usual, our event will still start with our Celebrity-Reception at Merivale Mall on Thursday, October 26 10 am to Noon – join us to meet the Carvers and welcome our Celebrities! We will run an additional 3 days until Sunday, October 29 in 4 Shopping Centres (Friday to Sunday at the other 3 malls).

FOR THE 2ND YEAR - We will be encouraging cash donations by giving ballots that will be combined for all 4 Malls to draw for 3 WOW prizes. But in order to make this event a success, we need many Volunteers to come forward to man the displays. With our On-Site Silent Auction with an On-Line Auction, this fundraiser is one of the most high-profile events for Children at Risk, raising not only valuable funds but awareness and support! Many hands are needed, so please check your schedules and give a little time, even a few hours!! (note: Students can help get their high school hours with a Parent!)

(P.S. WE WILL BE CLEANING PUMPKINS ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT MERIVALE MALL FARM BOY IN THE AFTERNOON – CAN YOU HELP?)

vonality logoWith the purchase of an Auction Site from Vonality the last 4 years, our Pumpkin Auction ran almost seamlessly – so we delighted to have them on-board again for this year!
